ShadowPD Project
ShadowPD is one of five components a Department of Education's Preparing
Tomorrow's Teachers To Use Technology (PT3) grant-funded project at the
University
of Missouri-Columbia (MU). The main objective of the project is to develop Web-based
applications to support pre-service teacher education. To accomplish this objective,
the project is working with MU College of Education faculty members and the
Shadow netWorkspace™ (SNS) team to inform the development of SNS so that it
will better suit faculty members' needs. Activities includes interacting with
faculty members to support their use of the existing system, and collecting
data on how SNS might be modified to better support their needs. The project
uses knowledge gained from these activities to contribute to the design and
development of SNS applications. Teacher educators can use the resulting applications
to support a community of learners that extends across semesters and physical
boundaries, with access to electronic portfolios, personal and public artifact
archives (i.e. lesson plans, action research reports, and video cases), and
communication tools.
Below are some of the activities of the ShadowPD project.
-
developed a design document and storyboard for a new discussion board, a multiplier peer assessment tool, and design specifications for a class group roadmap
-
completed multiple interviews with MU faculty about their software needs
-
conducted a comprehensive literature review of applications to support teacher education
-
showcased Shadow netWorkspace™ (SNS) and other parts of the MU Teacher Development Program (TDP) to representatives from the Center for Children and Technology (CCT)
-
conducted informal presentations at SITE 2000 conference in San Diego, CA
-
presented at AERA 2000 in New Orleans, LA, and SITE 2001
-
presented Shadow netWorkspace™ at multiple Prism faculty meetings and Brow Bag lunch sessions
-
collaborated with representatives from other PT3 projects with similar objectives
-
completed and submitted a supplementary request to enhance funding for ShadowPD project to the U.S. Department of Education
-
developed scenarios highlighting how SNS can be used in the MU Teacher Development Program (TDP)
-
assisted faculty members with implementing SNS into their courses
-
developed and delivered support materials for an adjunct faculty class
-
collaborated with members of the TDP to investigate the use of SNS as an e-portfolio support system
-
developed and delivered training for the Reflector and SWAT support staffs
-
collaborated with the Chautaqua Technology Integration Process project to have SNS and the ShadowPD project added to their database of technology use stories
-
assisted Dr. Minjuan Wang in her efforts to document the SNS project via a feature article in the Distance Educator.com journal, and evaluation of SNS for possible use at San Diego State University
-
coauthored and submitted a paper to the Communications of the Association for Computing Machinery journal
-
coauthored multiple submissions to the Computer Supported Collaborative Learning conference in Boulder, CO
-
designed and developed a problem-based learning environment to support early childhood educators building skills in making educational decisions using assessment data
-
developed a storyboard for a structured discussion board with Dr. David Jonassen
-
identified and developed needed support materials as part of SNS support group
-
as part of SNS research group, identified possible research topics and methods for investigating the use and impact of SNS
-
developed design documents for an integrated assessment application suite
(grade book, homework notifier, and assignment generator), as part of a SNS
design team; in addition to the Entity
Relationship Diagram,Functional
Decomposition Diagram, and Interface
Design we also produced a number of system diagrams and event diagrams
for the SNS integrated application suite
-
developed and delivered a summer course about networked learning systems and the Shadow netWorkspace with Dr. Jim Laffey and Joshua Gottdenker
-
developing and field testing a PBL environment for early childhood educators, and the structured discussion board
